Dr Anima Choudhury was born in 1953, to Late Dandiram Choudhury and Late Hemlata Choudhury at village Pakowaa in the present Nalbari district of Assam. Her father was an officer of the Government of Assam and served as Superintendent of Jail.
She did her schooling at Nagaon town up to class V. Her connection with music started in a music school at Nagaon. There she took lessons in Indian classical music under the tutelage of Guru Sushil Bannerji. Since her father was in a transferable government job, her schooling after class V was at Guwahati. While at Guwahati, she was taught classical music by another Guru, Mr Hiren Sarma. She passed her Matriculation examination from Panbazar Girls High School, Guwahati. From there she moved to Cotton College Guwahati. In 1970-71 she was adjudged the best singer of Cotton College. In 1972 she completed B.A from Gauhati University with Honours in History and in 1974 she did her M.A in History from the same University. In 1978, she joined Chaygaon College, situated in Chaygaon town of Kamrup district of Assam, as Head of the Department. In 1990, she earned her Doctorate Degree for her thesis “Temples and Shrines in and around Guwahati, a sociological and folkloristic exploration” under the guidance of Dr Birendra Nath Dutta, who himself is also a singer and a musicologist apart from being an academician.
She was married to Mr Kamal Choudhury who is a chemical engineer. They have one daughter Ms Aparajita Choudhury and a son Mr Pritam Choudhury, who also plays guitar, composes songs and makes short films.
Dr Anima Choudhury got the break in the Assamese music world after being the best singer in the Cotton College, when she was called in to lend her voice for the film “Mukuta মুকুতা”. The film was directed by Late Brojen Barua and Mr Ramen Barua his younger brother was its music director. Since then on, there has been no looking back for her musical career.
She has made several recordings both of modern and folk songs with the HMV company, in solo and in company with others. Later on she made recordings in audio cassettes and lately in compact disc. Being a versatile singer she has to her credit singing in a varied genre of Assamese folk music apart from the modern songs. Her list of folk genres ranges from Bargit, Tokaari git, Kamrupi lokagit, Goalparia lokagit, Bihu git to the Biyaanaams the Assamese wedding folk songs. She has also sung songs of the two greats of the Assamese music, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Bishnu Rabha. She was associated with the great singer Parvin Sultana who taught her to play Tanpura. Once,impressed by her performance in her teens in Nagaon, Parvin Sultana’s father Late Ikramul Mazid, himself a great exponent of classical music presented her a prize of Rs 10/-, value of which will be much more in the present times.
She draws inspiration from three other singers namely, Dipali Barthakur, Bhupen Hazarika and Lata Mangeshkar. But her main encouragement comes from her family. Her father and her mother were both music lovers and knew folk music well. Her brother Mr Mrinal Kumar Choudhury is also a singer cum lyricist. Many of the modern songs sung by her are penned by her brother. Her sister-in-law Mrs Rumi Anjana Choudhury is also an accomplished singer. On the whole, her family has given her a musical environment to thrive and grow in her musical journey.
Apart from being a singer and an academician, she was also an athlete in her school days. She was the best runner in her school and has taken part in the inter-school tournaments in that capacity.
Dr Anima Choudhury has given stage performances in several Bihu and other functions in Assam and outside. As a singer she has toured several places in India and abroad. She has the distinction of being invited to sing in United States of America for 5 times, there she has also given a show in one of the Television Stations in Chicago.
Dr Anima Choudhury resides in a quite environment away from the normal hustle bustle of the central part of Guwahati at Garchuk near the national highway.
