Sangeeta Borthakur was born on the 14th of October 1966, in the historic town of Sibasagar in eastern Assam. Her father Mr Bhupen Barthakur worked in the State Excise department and retired as Superintendent of Taxes, Government of Assam. Her mother’s name is Mrs Irani Barthakur.
As her father was in a transferable job, she had the opportunity of living in many places of Assam, during her childhood. She had her schooling in Tezpur and Dergaon. She passed matriculation examination while in Dergaon Girls High School in 1983. Then she obtained (Bachelor in Arts) degree studying in Dergaon Kamal Duara College under Dibrugarh University in 1989.
Since her childhood she learnt music, both classical and modern from Mr Karuna Sankar Thakuria in Dergaon. Passed Bisharad examination from Bishnu Digambar Institute (Gandharva Mahavidyalaya), Pune, Maharashtra in 1987.
She sang during her days in school and college, as well as in stage functions in various places. She passed the audition in All India Radio centre at Dibrugarh in 1983, getting A Grade status in the year 2000. Since the year 2003, she has been singing in All India Radio centre at Guwahati. Her first audio cassette is “Aaitaa tumi zeregnaar আইতা তুমি জেৰেঙাৰ” followed by albums like “Xangita সঙ্গীতা ” “Lataa sanekiyaa লতা চানেকিয়া ” “Aimani আইমনি” and “Ritur kata rang ঋতুৰ কত ৰং” later it was released as a Compact Disc (CD) also. Among her released audio CDs can be named “Nibir নিবিড়” “Naase dhei dhei নাচে ধেই ধেই”, in addition to that a video CD is yet to be released. She has given her voice in the songs of three Assamese films namely “Zoubane aamani kare যৌৱনে আমনি কৰে”, “Xex upahaar শেষ উপহাৰ” and “Mahapurux মহাপুৰুষ”. She was awarded the Jyotirupa Award in 1998 for the title song of the film “Zoubane aamani kare যৌৱনে আমনি কৰে”
She considers herself a singer by profession and was married in 1989 to Mr Pranab Goswami and engineer with the Public Health Department, Government of Assam. They have one son who is also an engineer and works in Bangalore, Karnataka.
She names her uncle Bhaben Barthakur, her parents plus lyricists and composers, Syed Sadullah and Hiren Gohain as the mentionable and memorable sources of inspiration and encouragement in her musical life.
